The Idaho Potato Commission represents over 600 local potato growers who produce nearly two dozen varieties of russet potatoes and red, yellow and fingerlings. A wide selection of fresh, frozen, dry (sometimes referred to as dehy) and refrigerated potatoes are sold within the state and nationally. Idaho produces 11 million pounds of potatoes annually on 300,000 acres and accounts for 1/3rd of the US crop each year. Members are assessed 12.5 cents per hundred pounds of potatoes to use towards advertising, marketing and promotion. Up to 10% of the annual budget goes towards crop research, primarily with University of Idaho. This year, 2011 marks the renaming of the Humanitarian Bowl for football to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. In 2012, the Commission and its members will celebrate 75 years of building such a strong brand awareness of Idaho potatoes, that it is often “top of mind” in word association when the state IDAHO is mentioned.
