Cherries

CherriesIdaho's cherry season is short so enjoy this delicious fruit while you can! Starting in mid-June, sweet cherries such as Bings are consumed almost as fast as they are put on the market. Idaho Bing cherries are large, dark, and firm with exceptional flavor and delivered to the market at the peak of freshness. Idaho also raises lighter-skinned varieties such as Lambert, Rainier, and Royal Ann cherries.

Not only are Idaho cherries delicious, but they also contain important nutrients including: pectin, which helps control blood cholesterol levels; vitamin C; beta-carotene; potassium; and antioxidants, a potential inhibitor of cancer. According to a 2004 study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, cherries also help ease arthritis pain. Cherries contain no fat and are low in calories giving you a deliciously sweet treat without the extra calories found in many desserts.

So, take in the hot summer air and cool off with a big bowl of ice cream topped with delicious Idaho cherries - or combine these two summertime favorites with the following recipe.
