Demeter

Demeter USA is the sole certifier for Biodynamic farms and products in the United States. It is part of Demeter International, a global organization established in 1928 and named after the Greek goddess of agriculture, dedicated to promoting Biodynamic farming and certifying Biodynamic operations. Demeter remains the world’s oldest ecological certification body, operating in fifty countries worldwide.

Demeter was incorporated as a nonprofit in the U.S. in 1985. While it upholds all the organic standards required by the National Organic Program, the Demeter certification goes further with more stringent requirements, including stricter guidelines for imported fertility, a stronger focus on farm-based solutions for pest, disease, and weed control, and detailed criteria for water conservation and biodiversity. As consumers become more informed about Biodynamic practices and experience the superior quality of Biodynamic products, farmers and brands are increasingly finding that Biodynamic certification meets all their needs.
