Bitner Vineyards

Idaho's first sustainable LIVE-certified, Salmon-Safe certified, and Bee-friendly Certified vineyard.

Bitner Vineyards is a boutique winery dedicated to quality over quantity, producing just 1,500 cases annually. The vineyard’s unique location and its meticulously cultivated grape varietals, which are grown on slopes ideally positioned to receive optimal sunlight, contribute to the exceptional character of their wines. This commitment to quality was recently recognized at the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, where Bitner Vineyards earned top honors, highlighting its status as a leading producer of high-quality wines.

Established in 1981, Bitner Vineyards is celebrated for both its exceptional wines and its commitment to environmental stewardship. From where it sits on a hilltop in the heart of Idaho’s Snake River Valley AVA, the winery offers stunning views of Idaho’s up-and-coming wine country, the Owyhee Mountains, and the Snake River below.

Dr. Ron Bitner is at the forefront of Bitner Vineyards and set out on his viticulture journey almost by accident. Initially buying his Caldwell property without any plans for winemaking, he soon discovered its ideal conditions for cultivating world-class wine grapes. Leveraging his expertise as a bee biologist, Dr. Bitner integrated sustainable practices into his vineyard management, recognizing the essential role of pollinators in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Under Dr. Bitner’s leadership, Bitner Vineyards achieved several significant sustainability certifications. As a world renowned Bee Biologist, Bitner Vineyards became Idaho’s first Bee Friendly Certified vineyard, and aligns with the Bee Friendly Farming (BFF) program from @PollinatorPartnership, which helps farmers protect and promote pollinators. In addition to this, Bitner Vineyards is also recognized as a LIVE Certified Sustainable Farm, ensuring that its sustainable practices meet rigorous independent standards. The winery has further earned the @SalmonSafe certification, which focuses on holistic, low-impact farming practices that safeguard water quality in the Snake River watershed, improve soil health, and provide essential habitats for bees.

Dr. Bitner’s work has had a significant impact on agriculture, regionally and beyond. His role on the Pollinator Partnership board has helped expand bee-friendly farmland from 800 acres to over 200,000 acres in just three years.  As an advocate of sustainable agriculture through education and public speaking, he continues to highlight the vital connection between pollinators and farming. His work has inspired many farmers to embrace more sustainable practices.

As you savor a glass of wine from Bitner Vineyards, you are not only enjoying the rare and coveted flavors of Idaho’s terroir but also tasting the fruits of a vineyard deeply committed to the land and its ecological balance.
