M&M Heath Farms

Mike and Marie Heath are the dedicated farmers behind M & M Heath, cultivating 20 acres of fertile land in the picturesque region of Buhl, Idaho. This may seem like a considerable undertaking, but it’s a significant shift from the 500 acres they once managed. Mike’s journey into organic farming began after a life-changing Methodist mission trip to Malaysia, where he observed the beneficial practices of organic farming. Inspired by the Malaysian farmers, Mike committed to bringing these sustainable methods back to the US, and the results have been remarkable.

M & M Heath specializes in growing organic potatoes, winter squash, and dried beans. Their dried beans are marketed under the Sunset Butte Organics brand. The varieties they produce include flageolet, pinto, white, small white, cannellini, and black beans.

They grow a wide range of potato varieties such as Melody, Yukon, Reds, Red Sonja, Russets, and Fingerlings (Russian Banana, French Fingerling, Peruvian Purple). Additionally, they produce Huckleberry Gold, Adirondack Purple, and Purple Majesty potatoes. Their potatoes are also featured at Boise Fry Co.

M & M Heath grows organic black and red beans for Amy’s Organics, so if you enjoy an Amy’s frozen burrito, there’s a good chance it includes beans grown right here in Idaho.

Mike is a strong advocate for USDA organic certification, emphasizing its importance for consumer trust and marketability. He advises farmers transitioning to organic practices to “take it slow, learn as you go, and don’t bet the whole farm on it the first year.”

The journey has not been without its challenges. Mike points out the uncertainties of income, weather, and weeds as significant hurdles, especially for an organic farmer. However, he proudly highlights their successes: “I’ve been a fan of diversity of production and markets, and that has proved I can farm organically and stay in business. I have tried new crops that aren’t big in these parts, and some have been very successful. We’ve been able to have abundant, good fresh food off our land.”

When asked what inspired him during tough times, Mike credits his fellow farmers, experience, and hope. He also draws inspiration from other organic farming pioneers like Fred Brossy, Nate Jones, and Beth Rasgorshek, who are committed to organic agriculture and willing to share their knowledge.
