Historical Context

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has played a pivotal role in the growth of organic farming in the state. The ISDA Organics Program was established in 1990 with the passage of the Organic Food Products Law (Title 22, Chapter 11, Idaho Code). In 2002, ISDA became one of the nation’s first accredited certifying agencies, setting high standards for organic certification and contributing to Idaho’s prominent position in organic agriculture.

The Organic Standard

In Idaho, organic food products adhere to strict guidelines to ensure quality and environmental responsibility. These products are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or growth regulators for at least 36 months prior to harvest. The ISDA organic label signifies that the products are processed, packaged, transported, and stored to retain their maximum nutritional value, free from artificial preservatives, colorings, additives, irradiation, or synthetic pesticides. The organic production system emphasizes sustainability and uses practices such as crop rotation and animal manure to maintain soil health and fertility.

Celebrate Idaho’s Agricultural Heritage

Idaho Organics Week provides an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of organic producers in Idaho. By supporting these farmers and understanding the benefits of organic practices, consumers can play a role in promoting a sustainable future for agriculture. This celebration not only acknowledges the achievements of Idaho’s organic sector but also highlights the state’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and high-quality food production.
